The Lochbach gets its water from the Lech barrage 22 (Lochbachanstich). On its way to the water towers at the Red Gate, water is diverted from the Lochbach into the Aumühlbach, the Neue Graben and the Alte Floßgraben. Spring water flows to him from the southern Mühlbach, the Mühlbach, the Ölbach and the Brunnenbach.
From the Red Gate, the Lochbach is called the Vorderer Lech and north of the Lechviertel, the Stadtbach. It unites in the Wolfzahnau with the Proviantbach. The water from the two streams feeds the hydropower station on the Wolfzahnau and finally flows into the Lech.

The Lochbach is an artificial canal in Augsburg that plays an important role in the city's historical water management. It is diverted from the Lech at the Lech dam level 22 near Unterbergen and flows for about 14.5 kilometers through the Augsburg city forest and the city area. On its way it feeds various streams and canals, including the Aumühlbach, the Neuer Graben and the Alten Floßgraben. In the Lechviertel it is called the Vorderer Lech and finally flows into the Stadtbach before flowing back into the Lech.

Historically, the Lochbach served to supply energy to mills, blacksmiths and later industrial companies. In the 19th century, for example, the Martini textile factory in Haunstetten used its water power. The Lochbach was also essential for the city's drinking water supply by directing water to the water towers at the Rotes Tor.

Today, the Lochbach is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Augsburg Water Management System” and a popular destination for walkers and cyclists. Along its course, there are numerous opportunities to experience Augsburg’s nature and historical hydraulic engineering.
