The place was called "Steffelsmühl" in 1495, named after the miller at the time, Hans Steffel. The property consisted of the mill house, a barn, a pigsty and two "little courtyard houses".
The mill belonged to the Lords of Stein. From 1505 it was subordinate to the Hilpoltstein office of the Palatinate-Neuburg. This was pledged to the imperial city of Nuremberg for 36 years from 1542. In the rent-office registry that Nuremberg had created in 1544, it is said that the "Steffansmühl" has two corridors and belongs to the Patrician Imhoff family of Nuremberg, who also exercised lower jurisdiction. The description of the Hilpoltstein office from 1604 also mentions the "Steffansmuhl".
