Eltmann - for a pre-Franconian settlement, the name can only be clarified to a limited extent. Certainly the oldest spelling "Altimoin" is based on the Main, further interpretations are speculative.

Very early on, Eltmann was described as a "castellum munitissimum" whose former splendor is only recognizable from the ruins. The land around 750 was owned by Gaugraf Gumbertus, said to be a close relative of the Carolingian house. This count turned to the Christian faith so much that he transferred his possessions in Eltmann and the surrounding villages to the young diocese of Würzburg (according to Dr. Nik. Wolf in 775). The parish erected here afterwards is considered to be one of the original parishes of the diocese, especially since the patron saint of Joh. Baptista points to an early baptistery.

The town of Eltmann am Main is located in the Free State of Bavaria, in the eastern part of the administrative district of Lower Franconia and in the district of Haßberge, on the edge of the Steigerwald. Eltmann is classified as a sub-centre and supplies the catchment area accordingly. It is assigned to the Main-Rhön region. The Haßberge district is a rural area.
