In the 10th century, traveling blacksmiths came to this area in order to mine the iron ore that was available seasonally. The forest smiths used the racing furnace to extract iron and used the raw materials iron ore and wood (in the form of charcoal) which are abundant in nature. The first settlers settled down along the Rennsteig mountain ridge about three centuries later, it was charcoal burners and forest workers who built the permanent settlement of Alte Ruhl near the Rennsteig.

The "knife path" between Ruhla and Steinbach.
The area from the Ruhla city exit to this point is called "Alte Ruhl" because it was the location of the initial settlement in Ruhla. Like the village of Glasbach in the immediate Rennsteig area
