The New Fountain in Mainz's Bleichenviertel is a late Baroque building. It was built between 1724 and 1726 by Johannes Weydt (court and city architect under Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn). The most striking feature of the fountain is the approximately 12 meter high obelisk in the center, which is covered with bas-reliefs on various themes. At its base there are a total of four sculptures, each depicting two river gods and two lions. The oval basin and the obelisk are made of red sandstone.

The river gods (Rhine and Main) were created by Franz Matthias Hiernle in 1726, but were exchanged for copies in 1877; The originals have since been exhibited in the Mainz State Museum. The sphinx-like lions from Savonnières (limestone) were designed by Joseph Scholl and replaced the previously existing nymphs from 1828 onwards.

There is hardly a monument in downtown Mainz that you literally have to walk past so often as a pedestrian. Or better: walk around it - like the New Fountain on Neubrunnenplatz.
If you come down Lotharstrasse and want to cross the Große Bleiche, it inevitably attracts your attention. Not just because of its sheer size. The baroque fountain also seems almost a little alien in the middle of the ensemble of purpose-built post-war buildings around the square.
Until the city was destroyed in the Second World War in 1942, the New Fountain was part of a representative square, surrounded by the former university bursary and the Wolf-Metternich Court.
