The absolutely impressive cathedral goes back to designs by Archbishop Willigis in 975. Since then, the church has been the victim of fires, lightning strikes and sieges. The cathedral has been rebuilt and renovated over the centuries. It contains features from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Anyone who is in Mainz should not miss a visit to this imposing building.

The High Cathedral of St. Martin in Mainz is the cathedral (bishop's church) of the Roman Catholic diocese of Mainz and is under the patronage of St. Martin of Tours. The east choir is dedicated to St. Stephan. The building, which belongs to the imperial domes, is in its present form a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica, which has Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements in its additions.

After Speyer Cathedral and Worms Cathedral, Mainz Cathedral is the oldest monumental vaulted building in Germany. The laying of the foundation stone in 975 was followed by an eventful building history over the centuries. She shaped the imposing church made of red sandstone into what it is today: the landmark and a piece of identity of the city of Mainz.

In the heart of Mainz lies the lively market square and St. Martin's Cathedral towers above it. Archbishop Willigis had it built in the 10th century based on the model of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The church experienced seven royal coronations, but also seven fires. Not least because of this, the church architecture is characterized by numerous renovations and extensions. But the old basic dimensions and the Romanesque appearance have never been lost sight of.

When you step through the large portal of the imperial cathedral, the babble of voices in the lively old town disappears. The interior with three naves, two choirs and numerous chapel extensions offers the opportunity for silent devotion. Anyone who would like to get to know the hidden details and special features of the mighty building can take part in an exciting cathedral tour.

The two-story cloister from the 15th century is also worth seeing. The canons once lived in the adjacent buildings. Today it houses the Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum, the second largest of its kind in Germany. In the museum you will find a large collection of sacred works of art in addition to changing exhibitions.
