In 1923, the current special garden was created as a school garden by the Wandsbeker teacher association. This is suggested by the name of the adjacent street Am Schulgarten. Thirty years later, in 1953, he was renamed the botanical special garden Wandsbek with the current name. During the Second World War, vegetables were grown on the site to supply the population with food. Today, the special garden is mainly used for rest and relaxation as well as for the knowledge transfer about the planted and exhibited plants.
The Botanical Garden Wandsbek comprises over 1,000 different plant species in the areas of parks, greenhouses and planters. The area is fenced, the entrance is free and open all year round during the day. Access to the greenhouses is subject to different opening hours. The garden is dedicated to numerous events of knowledge transfer around the topic of botany. These range from holiday programs for children through plant exchanges to refinement courses for hobby fruit growers. Under the name Botanischer Kalenderblatt information on certain plants is offered on display boards in the greenhouses and on the Internet.
