The building of the Märkisches Museum, completed in 1908, is somewhat reminiscent of the St. Catherine's Church in Brandenburg an der Havel and part of the facade is actually based on the model. But the Märkisches Museum was never a church, but the first building in the world that was specifically designed as a city museum. In the overall complex you can see very different parts of the building that refer to specific models from different historical eras. In addition, the museum was state-of-the-art when it opened and after it was extensively renovated in recent years, you can now admire the completely revised permanent exhibition on the history of Berlin (stadtmuseum.de/maerkisches-museum).

It is the main museum of the Berlin City Museum Foundation with a focus on culture and history. In front of it are the figure of Roland, an impressive church bell, an original segment of the Berlin Wall and a monument to Heinrich Zille and one for the "Cornerstay Nante", an original from earlier times.

The name is a bit confusing for many newcomers, because hardly anyone expects the official “Berlin Museum” here.

Anyone who knows the museum from the past should be told that the Märkisches Museum has a completely revised Berlin exhibition, which has been open since June 10, 2018.

Note: Every 1st Wednesday of the month it means "free entry"!
