Named for the brooding pool that ripples beneath its towering, sheer walls of frowning crag, Lochnagar is a magnificent mountain, quite at odds with the rounded green summits that epitomise this part of the Mounth plateau. Hikes to Lochnagar rank amongst the finest in Scotland. So fine are the trails that they have often been the haunt of royalty, situated as it is in the sprawling Balmoral Estate.
