The Alte Münze Museum is located on the opposite side of the central moat.
In addition to the churches, the city museum offers a multifaceted and entertaining insight into the life of Friedrichstadt from its founding to modern times.

In 1626, five years after Friedrichstadt was founded, Adolph van Wael had a storage building built on the Mittelburggraben. The building site was cleverly chosen: the goods from all over the world that were to be transshipped in Friedrichstadt could be brought by ship directly to the door of the building. The Dutchman had his attic magnificently furnished. Friedrichstadt did not become a flourishing trading town, but always remained a tranquil little town. The right to mint, which the Duke had actually guaranteed to the people of Friedrichstadt, was never granted. Nevertheless, Adolph van Wael's granary was given the name "Coin" because, after all, he was the Duke's governor. Today the magnificent building houses the “Alte Münze” city museum.
