All the GDR radio stations were at home here: Berliner Rundfunk, Radio DDR, Deutschlandsender, Radio Berlin International, Voice of the GDR and DT64. Among other things, the transmission masts in Mahlsdorf-Süd and Königs Wusterhausen were broadcast. The masts in Mahlsdorf-Süd have now all disappeared, in Königs Wusterhausen there is still one for museum purposes. Since 1969, of course, the television tower in Berlin has also been broadcasting on Alexanderplatz.

The former Broadcasting House of the GDR (also called Funkhaus Nalepastraße) is a partially listed building complex in the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick. From 1956 to 1990 the radio of the GDR had its seat here. Since its closure the complex has been called Funkhaus Berlin.

According to the use, the listed part of the radio building was subdivided into four functionally separate building parts, which are connected to each other by bridge-like, column-supported transitions. In the monumental main building with the dominant, nine-storey tower house, numerous offices for the editors and administration as well as recording studios for radio broadcasts were built. The arched studio building was built for unique acoustics according to the house-in-house principle and includes several recording and radio play studios as well as the large broadcasting hall 1.

After several changes of ownership after the fall of the Wall, a Berlin daily reported in July 2015 that the listed facilities of the Funkhaus Nalepastraße now belong to a consortium of several private entrepreneurs who are already owners and operators of the Postbahnhof, the Erdmann-Höfe and the water tower on Ostkreuz. You bought the property for twelve million euros and intend to build “one of the largest music studios in the world” here.
