...The term "Hildegard medicine" was not introduced as a marketing term until 1970. Hildegard's achievement lies, among other things, in the fact that she brought together the knowledge of diseases and plants from the Greco-Latin tradition at the time with that of folk medicine and (as had previously been done in an Innsbruck herbal book) used the German plant names. Above all, however, she developed her own views on the origins of diseases, physicality and sexuality. She did not develop her own medical procedures, but simply compiled already known treatment methods from various sources. Hildegard's theory of disease is very similar to the ancient theory of the four humors, only with different names. The herbalism from Causae et Curae contains many very direct instructions, each of which is arranged according to symptoms. They are therefore also easy to use for medical laypeople. For example, it says: “On watering eyes: Anyone who has watery eyes, as if they were watering, should pick a fig leaf that has been thoroughly moistened by dew during the night, when the sun has already warmed it on its branch, and place it warm on his eyes to limit their moisture…” or “If a person’s hearing is damaged by some kind of phlegmatic substance or other type of illness, take white incense and let smoke rise from it over a living fire and let this smoke rise into the ear that is being obstructed…”.
