The Kitzkammer is a natural monument – a rock niche between basalt columns. At the end of the Tertiary period (around five million years ago), thin lava penetrated through cracks in the earth's surface and crystallized perpendicular to the cooling surface, creating pentagonal and polygonal (blue) basalt columns. The resulting transverse columnar basalt can be clearly seen in the Kitzkammer. The Kitzkammer itself is one of these chimneys.

The Kitzkammer got its name from a fairy tale about Mother Holle - Kitz does not stand for fawn, but for cats.
In winter you should take every step carefully, because it can get very slippery.

And based on the folk tale of the Meißnerberge by Karl Christoph Schmieder (1819):

"Mrs. Holle especially took care of the poor girls who were left unfaithfully by their fiancés. Many of them were vain and addicted to cleaning. Each wanted to be the most beautiful, and there was much envy and strife among them. When Mother Holle came home one day and noticed the quarrels, she got angry. She shook her magic bell and immediately the girls were transformed into cats. They were banished to a rocky cave on the evening side of the Meißner. The cave is now called the Kitzkammer. From there the cats had to spread all over the mountain and serve Mother Holle. They had to show the good wanderers the way, but lead the bad ones astray.”

It is said of the Kitzkammer that a tall white woman with a mighty bunch of keys would occasionally appear to the wanderer there, walk silently next to the wanderer and then disappear into the Kitzkammer. She wanted to give a golden key to a shepherd boy from Hausen, but he got scared and ran home. With the key he could have unlocked their subterranean realm.

The Kitzkammer is located between the Hoher Meißner hiking car park and the Naturfreundehaus. A striking, geologically interesting stone massif around which there are several legends.

Located on the southwest slope of the Meißner, the Kitzkammer is a cave surrounded by basalt columns, but is no longer accessible today. It lies at the upper end of a wild gorge not far from a small mountain stream. Many Holle myths surround it.
