Magnificent views down into the valley with the wild Rhone await you on this partly exposed and narrow hiking trail. The word "Pfyfoltru" means butterfly in Valais German - this symbolizes natural vine cultivation.

Before the construction of the railway line (closed) and the road through the Dala Gorge, the Gemmiweg from Sierre via Varen and Leukerbad to the Gemmi Pass and on to Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland was an important pedestrian connection. Also J.W. Goethe completed this route, only accompanied by his friend Duke Carl August von Weimar, on November 9th, 1779 "to the Leucker Bad. Beautiful view of the Valais, difficult path [...] evil rock passage" he noted in his diary.

The path has been revived today as the "Culture Trail Dala Raspille" and is easy to walk through forest and meadows. The "evil rock passage" of the Varnerleitern has also been defused and can easily be avoided on the hiking trail. A varied route with many changing views and vegetation aspects, particularly beautiful on the section between Varen and below Leukerbad.
