Surname
The Jakobi Church bears the name of the apostle James the Elder, who died as a martyr in 44 AD. In the pre-Reformation period, the Jakobi Church was one of the many stops made by pilgrims on their way to the tomb of the apostle in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In this country, the Jakobi Church is better known under the name "Radewiger Church", so called after the
District around the Gänsemarkt, which today is called "the Radewig" and which has been called "Roter Wik" since the 9th century.
Story
Little is known about the beginnings of St. Jakobi. The current Gothic building, completed in the 2nd quarter of the 14th century, was built over the foundations of a smaller Romanesque basilica of the 11th-12th centuries. As late as 1135, the Jakobi church appears in a document as "Capella", and a bull from Pope Julius II (1503 to 1513) from 1510 shows that St. Jakobi was also a parish church. The hallmark of the pilgrims to St. James was the shell "pecten jacobaeus", a scallop with a fan-like ribbed shell, which the pilgrims used as a drinking vessel. This shell greeted the pilgrims from the south-west buttress of the Jakobi Church.
In the years 1530 to 1536 the Reformation prevailed in Herford. In 1530, the Jakobi church was closed by order of the council because of the growing number of grievances among the pilgrims, although it was still subject to the Catholic Reichsstift. there are two church services at the weekend (three in the winter months) in the Jakobi Church. It is also popular as a baptismal, wedding and concert church. The Jakobi Church is an important stopover on the newly developed Way of St. James from Minden via Herford to Soest.
