The old customs bridge in Heckinghausen from 1775 is the oldest surviving bridge in the city and once formed the customs border between the Duchy of Berg (Rhineland) and the County of Mark (Westphalia).
It is still usable for pedestrians and cyclists.

It survived the Second World War unscathed. From 1949 onwards, even the 0 bus ran across it. In 1955, it was closed to car traffic for the first time. In 1961, a general renovation took place, during which the mortarless bridge was also sprayed with cement, as it was expected to be subjected to enormous loads. Due to the construction of a new Bockmühl bridge, traffic had to be diverted over the old bridge. It was not until 1975, on the 200th anniversary, that cars were finally banned from the bridge.

The list of anecdotes and stories is as long as the history of the bridge. In particular, the fact that only pedestrians were allowed to cross for free led to some funny situations. A young mother who could not carry her heavy twins and had to push them in a stroller had to pay for this transport. Since there was no tariff point for strollers and babies, the bridge keeper simply charged 4 Pfennig for "2 small animals at 2 Pfennig each." A goat on a rope (goat led on a rope) cost 1 Pfennig. If you took the goat on your shoulder and carried it across, you paid nothing! The bridge toll collector also gained involuntary fame, as he was given a horse apple instead of the bridge toll.
