This lock from 1592 is the oldest existing and working lock. The surroundings, including the Sashuis, have been completely restored. This location is of great value to shipping history. Until 1950 this lock was still used daily. Ample parking is provided here. Ideal place to start cycling or walking tours. Have fun in Klein Brabant

The Bornem lock is the second oldest hydraulic engineering structure in Belgium, and the oldest in Flanders. It dates from 1592 and was built by order of Pedro Coloma (1556-1592), first baron of Bornem.
(A replica of) a stone refers to this: "The Illustrious Lord Pedro Coloma, Baron of the Lordship of Bornem, Lord of Bovadilla, etc. had the underground lock converted into a navigable waterway here. In the year of Our Lord, 1592"
The lock is located in the Oude Schelde, a tributary of the Schelde. In the 13th century, this part was closed because the bed of the Schelde shifted.
Until 1950, the Oude Schelde was still navigated by small ships. In 2000, the lock was restored. The municipality has redesigned the area so that it is attractive as a recreational area. The former lock house, where smuggling was often done in the area, is now used as a restaurant.
