    Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian had the castle built in 1347 to repel raids from Bohemia. The castle was stormed and partly destroyed in 1498. In 1865 the so-called Schellenberg-Niggl, the last inhabitant of the castle grounds, left the Schellenberg. Today the castle ruins, which are located at 826 meters, are the highest vantage point in the Upper Palatinate.

                In 1347, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian had Schellenberg Castle, which was then called "Lug ins Land", built to protect against attacks from Bohemia. On July 12, 1498, the castle was stormed under the leadership of Captain Konrad von Wirsberg, who was in the service of the Margrave of Brandenburg. The castle was partially destroyed. Their owner, Knight Moritz von Guttenberg, was captured. The castle was never rebuilt.

                                                Schellenberg Castle Ruins

                                                Schellenberg Castle was built in 1347 as part of the Waldthurn domain by the Lords of Waldau and fell to Konrad von Waldau shortly afterwards in a division of property in 1352. In 1360, Ulrich von Waldau zu Waldthurn took Schellenberg Castle as a fief from King Charles IV, who ceded it to Duke Otto of Bavaria in 1373. The castle, which had been pledged to Philipp von Guttenberg, was conquered and destroyed in the Guttenberg Feud in 1498 by Konrad von Wirsberg, captain of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Kulmbach. It was then redeemed by the Waldthurns but never rebuilt.
                                                In 1540, Georg von Waldau zu Waldthurn sold the Waldthurn estate and the ruins to Willibald Albrecht Eitel von Wirsberg. In 1648, Prince Wenzel von Lobkovitz acquired the ruins and built a nearby hunting lodge, which was demolished in 1865.
                                                The ruins of the residential tower are visible from afar and sit on a huge, almost 10 m high granite rock. The restored access via a footbridge from the neighboring rock head, on which traces of a building still remain, leads to the western corner of an elongated residential tower. Its gable sides angle off several times to the northeast and southwest. The walls made of quarry stone with square corners, which are still up to 9 m high and up to 2 m thick, have hardly retained any construction details, and the entire southeast side has largely collapsed. The castle complex undoubtedly used the many individual granite blocks to connect them with walls and to build over them.
                                                Today the castle ruins have been renovated, are accessible via a footbridge from the neighboring rock and have a wooden observation tower.
