Skagen West was built in 1956 to replace the Højen lighthouse, which was in danger of collapsing into the sea. The lighthouse is cast in concrete using the slip-form method on a former German bunker. The casting took 14 days to complete, which is roughly the same time as the construction of Skagen Lighthouse. However, it should also be noted that Skagen Lighthouse has walls that are thicker than the outer diameter of Skagen West. Skagen West Lighthouse was designed from the outset for remote-controlled operation, so the residential buildings normally found by a lighthouse were not installed. It is remotely controlled from a command post at Skagen Lighthouse.

Skagen, known as a picturesque fishing village on Denmark's northernmost tip, is home to many historical treasures. One of the most notable is the Skagen Vest Lighthouse, the northernmost lighthouse in Jutland.

Built in 1956, the Skagen Vest Lighthouse stands on the foundations of an old World War II bunker. This innovative step became necessary when the dynamic coastline of Grenen threatened the Højen Lighthouse, built in 1892. To continue Skagen's maritime tradition and ensure the safety of sailors, the Skagen Vest Lighthouse was constructed in record time from special precast concrete elements on the old bunker foundation. The original Højen Lighthouse was demolished in 1976 due to land erosion and the associated danger.

With an impressive 31-meter height of light, the lighthouse serves as an essential landmark for ships transiting the waters around Grenen. Its distinctive light signal, which flashes three times every 10 seconds in different sectors, is a reliable guiding light in the often stormy waters of the north.

Although the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the surrounding area offers numerous opportunities for visitors. A stroll along the beach or through the nearby dunes offers breathtaking views of the lighthouse and the surrounding landscape.

The Skagen Vest Lighthouse is not only a symbol of Skagen's maritime history, but also a testament to the impressive ability of humans to adapt to their environment and the constant change of nature.
