The patronage of this church, "Annunciation of Mary (or in another spelling: Annunciation of the Virgin Mary), refers to one of the many memorial days or feast days in honor of the Mother of God, Mary. The Feast of the Annunciation to Mary (liturgical name: Annunciation of the Lord) is celebrated on March 25, exactly 9 months before Christmas. It refers to the message that the angel of the Lord brought her that she was to give birth to the Son of God - Jesus Christ.
According to the report in the 1st chapter of the Gospel of Luke, this happened here in Nazareth. This impressive church was built where this happened - according to a tradition dating back around two thousand years. It is therefore the 'original patron church' for the title of all Annunciation churches worldwide.
