Located in the northern section of the city wall, the Blankenburger Gate appears as early as 1372 as the "Blankenberger Gate" in old documents on the city's history. The Blankenburger and Upper Gates formed the city's important passages along the old trade route. The Blankenburger Street, which leads here, still represents trade in the city. Its course corresponds to that of the old Imperial Road. The use of the gate as a bathhouse (mentioned in 1380) and the shooting house in the 15th century are noteworthy. Both were located directly at the gate and were often the focus of public interest. Spared from the city fires, the tower was reduced to two floors in the 18th century due to dilapidation and received the baroque dome.
