The water wheel was built according to old models and put into operation on April 9, 1976.
It is reminiscent of the use of hydropower in the 11th century, which was of fundamental importance for the industrial development at the Rhine Falls.

Since ancient times, mills have been operated at the Rhine Falls, especially on the north side, using small parts of the water power. In the 17th century a blast furnace for smelting polishing ores was built on the right side of the falls and operated for about a century and then again in the first half of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, Johann Georg Neher received rights to use the water power at the Rhine Falls, which remained in his family for a long time. The power plant supplied the Swiss wagon factory and, from 1889, the first European aluminum plant of the Aluminum Industry Share Company with energy. In 1947 the name was changed to Rheinkraft Neuhausen AG.

For 40 years, the mill-wheel at the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen has turned lively in the water; now it was time for a new one. The new bucket wheel made of regional oak wood has a diameter of 5.20 meters, a weight of 4.5 tons and consists of rims and spokes made of 30 shovels. It was transported in two parts from the workshop in Beringen to the Rhine Falls and put together on site.
