The construction of the Große Straße as a parade route and central axis of the site was completed in 1939. It faces the medieval Imperial Castle in a north-westerly direction. This was intended to establish a historical connection to the Holy Roman Empire and the Diets in Nuremberg. However, it could never be used for party conferences, since such events were no longer held after the beginning of the war.

The actual road is two kilometers long (1.5 kilometers have been completed) and 40 meters wide. South of the dozen ponds, it is flanked by grandstand steps, which means that the width in this area is around 60 meters. Granite slabs in two different colors were laid on a concrete base. The street was textured with the colors light and dark gray to make it easier for groups marching there to keep alignment. The light grey, square plates have an edge length of 1.2 m, which corresponded to the length of two Prussian goose steps. This should also make it easier to keep the formation during parades. Until 1964 it served as the runway for the U.S. Army, which operated DHC-2 "Beaver" fixed-wing aircraft and Sikorsky S-58 helicopters there.

The Great Street is the central axis of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and was intended to serve as a parade street. It is 60 m wide and, with a length of 2 km, was intended to serve as a connection between the congress hall and March field. 1.5 km were realised, but 60,000 granite slabs had to be laid for this alone. After the end of the war in 1945, the US Army used the Grosse Strasse as a temporary airfield. Today, part of the "Große Strasse" is used as a parking lot.
