After the wall was built in 1966, there was only one escape in the Mödlareuth area.
On May 25, 1973, a professional driver passed his barkas
B 1000 around midnight
Checkpoint Haidefeld and the border post at the protective strip gate Mödlareuth. The driver was in possession of a valid pass. At a place that was difficult to see for the border guards, he turned off the road, switched off his vehicle lights and drove the 6 m wide control strip to this point. The border guards on the wooden observation tower about 100 m away became aware and turned the searchlight on the vehicle. Nevertheless, the driver managed to escape over the wall with the help of an iron ladder he had carried.

I don't know how the residents of Mödlareuth feel now with the sometimes enormous crowd ... but I think better than before!
We were there when the concrete wall was opened. You don't forget that!
