Since around the 14th century "Des Rades Liberie" was housed in the town hall and only accessible to the council members. When the neighboring Franciscan monastery of St. Marien was dissolved in 1555, the library was moved to the refectory of the monastery for reasons of space and merged with the existing Franciscan collection of writings.
Over several centuries the collection grew through acceptance from other libraries and donations from wealthy citizens. Only a select group of people (councilors, patricians, doctors, pharmacists and scholars) could quench their thirst for knowledge here. It was not until the 20th century that the library was opened to everyone.

The council library of the city of Lüneburg is over 600 years old and is therefore one of the oldest city libraries in Germany. Originally founded as "des rades liberie" and located in the town hall, it was combined with the Franciscan library after the Lüneburg Franciscan monastery was closed in 1555 and housed in the former monastery building.
A Gothic hall with cross vaults is well preserved on the ground floor. The library's fiction department and the accounting area are located in this room. A remnant of the cloister has also been preserved, which can be seen through an armored glass door. The manuscripts and incunabula of the library are located here.
The children's and youth library of the city of Lüneburg is now located in the former parish widow's apartments in the cloister courtyard. Parts of this building ensemble also date from the monastery era.
For centuries the library was a collection point for other libraries in the city and was able to increase its holdings through donations from Lüneburg patricians, doctors and pharmacists. Today the Ratsbücherei Lüneburg owns 796 manuscripts, 1131 incunabula and around 20,000 prints from the 16th to 18th centuries. Century. Around 15,000 volumes date from the 19th century. The most important manuscripts include the Lüneburg legal manuscripts: Sachsenspiegel (around 1410 and 1445) and Schwabenspiegel (around 1410).

The Ratsbücherei is one of the oldest city libraries in Germany and is still a public library. It is located in the remter of the former Franciscan monastery that was dissolved in 1530. In 1555 the city took over the building and united the "Rades Liberi" of the city with the library of the Franciscan monastery. This is how a collection of treasures was created. This is not public and can only be viewed through a glass door.
