The square is located on the banks of the Tagus River, in the former Terreiro do Paço (Palace Square), where the royal court used to be located in the 16th century. After the devastating earthquake of 1755, the Marquis of Pombal ordered its reconstruction in a U-shape, with three large arcaded buildings housing government agencies, Lisbon's main tourist office, and a few restaurants and cafés, such as Martinho da Arcada, the oldest in the city.

Next to the jetties on the Tagus, there is the commercial center, which is still called Palace Square (Terreiro do Paço), although the Royal Palace fell victim to the earthquake (1755). In the middle of the square sits King José I. On the north side impresses a monumental triumphal arch.

The Praça do Comércio square is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. On the south side it borders the immense Tagus estuary. Until the age of the airplane, this was Lisbon's grand reception area for ships. Kings and heads of state who visited Portugal arrived here.

Before the 1755 earthquake, the square was called Terreiro do Paço. The royal palace “Paço Real” was located on the west side of the square from the beginning of the 16th century, until D. Manuel moved the Castelo de São Jorge castle to this place. In 1580, Philip I of Portugal had a new palace built, designed by Filippo Terzi and Juan Herrera (the same architect of El Escorial). All this was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. The name Praça do Comércio dates back to the time (during the time of the Marquis of Pombal). The then minister of King D. Lisbon's Praça do Comércio is a historic square in the heart of the city and a popular tourist destination. Originally used as a goods transshipment point, it is now a popular place for walks and events.

The square was destroyed by the earthquake in 1755 and was later rebuilt in a classical style. Here you will find impressive buildings such as the Arco Triunfal, the Royal Palace Theater and the Royal Coffee House.

From here you have a beautiful view of the Tagus River and the Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge. It is also a great base for exploring Lisbon as it is in close proximity to many other attractions such as Rossio Square and the Alfama district.

Visitors can also enjoy local dishes such as pastel de nata, sardines and bacalhau, offered in the surrounding cafes and restaurants.

The Praca de Comercio is Lisbon's main square. Almost everyone passes by it at some point during a city trip. It is located in front of the Arco da Rua Augusta.

The central shopping street, Rua Augusta, begins at the square. The Lisboa Story Centre Museum is located at the western end of the Praca de Comercio. Martinho da Arcada is the oldest café in Lisbon. It has stood at the northern end since 1792.

Two tables are always reserved in the café: the table of Fernando Pessoa, the famous Portuguese poet who died in the 1930s, and the table of Nobel Prize winner José Saramago.

From here is a good starting point to explore the old town. Lies on the Tejo, many buses leave from here and it's a beautiful square.

Almost right on the edge of the old town, because the Tejo runs past here. A beautifully designed place worthy of the king and his throne. It's also nice that you can take the water taxis/ferries from here and watch all the big ships come and go.
