St. Jakobi Church

It was founded as the third parish church in the old town at the end of the 13th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1303.
At that time it existed as a three-aisled hall church with a just closing choir and a west tower.
The latter probably collapsed during the 14th century.

The Jakobi Church is the hardest hit in the history of the Sundian churches. During the siege of Wallenstein in 1628, thirty storeys destroyed the church. In 1662 the Gothic tower pyramid burns down due to lightning. Artillery fire caused considerable damage to the interior of the church in 1678 and 1715.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the French used it as a horse stable.
St. Jakobi was badly hit in the air raid on October 6, 1944. The magnificent pulpit by the Stralsund sculptor Hans Lucht can be saved from the interior by outsourcing.
In 1995, with the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, a thorough restoration of the entire structure begins.
The St. Jakobi Church is used today as a cultural church for art fairs and events. In the Gustav-Adolf-Saal you can see interesting music and theater performances.
