                      Since the transporter bridge is out of service, not so many alternatives for pedestrians and cyclists remain (except the Nobiskrug ferry). The escalators are spectacular but unfortunately a little too slow.

                          On May 28, 1965, the pedestrian tunnel was opened to traffic as a new connection between Rendsburg and Westerrönfeld. It crosses the Kiel Canal at the site of the old swing bridge from 1913.

                          When both shipping and road traffic increased significantly in the 1950s, the Rendsburg swing bridge was no longer sufficient. Ever more frequent and longer bridge openings led to long traffic jams on the intersecting federal highway. The Rendsburg road tunnel was therefore designed, initially with a central tube for pedestrians and cyclists. For reasons of space and because the federal road B 77 was to be bypassed to the west of the city of Rendsburg as a bypass, the tunnel with its long ramps could not be built directly next to the swing bridge. However, moving 600 meters further to the west would have resulted in significant detours for pedestrians. Therefore, two separate tunnel structures were built, the road tunnel (opened on July 25, 1961) and the pedestrian tunnel, the construction of which began in 1962.
                          The swing bridge was taken out of service in 1961 after the road tunnel was put into operation. Therefore, from 1961 to 1965, a ferry was used as a substitute for pedestrian and cyclist traffic. In contrast to the road tunnel, which was built partly using the immersion method and partly using the cut-and-cover method, shield tunneling was used for the pedestrian tunnel. Shipping was not impeded during construction.


                          At the north entrance building is the operations center (control center) with the control center manned around the clock to monitor the tunnel systems. The tunnel is monitored by cameras.

                          On each side, two escalators and one elevator each lead to a depth of 27 m below the canal water level. At the time of installation in 1965, the escalators were the longest escalators in Western Europe.

                            The pedestrian tunnel has a total length of 267 meters. The actual tunnel tube under the Kiel Canal is 130 meters long. The tunnel is accessible via one elevator and two escalators on each side, north and south. Traversing the entire tunnel via elevators or escalators takes about 3 to 4 minutes.

                                  It is possible to transport bicycles on the escalator. It is only forbidden to take bulky items with you. Pictograms (signs) on the escalators regulate what is permitted and what is not.

                                  The escalators are always switched on both sides in such a way that one runs from top to bottom and the other runs from bottom to top in the opposite direction. If one of the two escalators does not work, e.g. due to maintenance, the functioning escalator is switched so that the main flow of traffic can use it. Oncoming traffic then uses the elevator to divert.
                                  The tunnel control center is located on the north side of the tunnel. The control center is staffed around the clock: 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The escalators, the elevator, the tunnel tube... everything is under video surveillance. The tunnel control center employee can follow what is happening in the tunnel exactly. Loudspeakers and an intercom system are of course also available.

                                      Unfortunately, the transporter bridge was suspended after a collision with a ship and will probably not be running again any time soon.
                                      So the tunnel will be the possibility for pedestrians and cyclists to get over and under the canal until further notice.

                                            Take the escalator into the tunnel, walk through it, and then climb back up the other side.
                                            Alternatively, there's an elevator that's accessible with bicycles.
