Bad Reichenhall (until 1890 Reichenhall) is a large district town and the district town of the Berchtesgadener Land district in the Upper Bavaria administrative region. Salt production can be traced back to Roman times. The Bad Reichenhall saltworks now markets its Reichenhall branded salt throughout Germany and beyond. After the town fire in 1834, the brine springs were also the basis for the development of the spa, which offers various brine treatments (bathing cure, drinking cure and aerosol cure) and was eventually elevated to the status of Bavarian state spa.

The fountain on the central town hall square was built as a "monument to the unchanging gratitude of the citizens of Reichenhall towards the ancient, ancestral house of the Wittelsbach family". The design by the Munich sculptor Karl Killer (1873-1948) was executed in Ochsenfurt shell limestone. The octagonal pool has a diameter of 7 meters and a total height of 11 meters.
