    The medieval castle high above Bad Reichenhall was built around 1218. Gruttenstein Castle has served as a barracks, bulwark, accommodation for salt workers and the administrative headquarters of the Salzmaier. The facility has been privately owned since 2002. But every year there is an Easter market, a wine festival and an Advent market.

          Gruttstein Castle is on the way from Bad Reichenhall to Bayerisch Gmain. You can reach them from Bad Reichenhall via various routes. Below is a small parking lot where you can stop by car. It is surrounded by beautiful meadows and you have a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Definitely worth a walk, no matter where you come from.

            Gruttenstein Castle is a protected hilltop castle in Bad Reichenhall in the Bavarian district of Berchtesgadener Land. Gruttenstein Castle is 500 m above sea level. NHN above the town center of Bad Reichenhall at Pfannhauserweg 3. The builder and the time of construction are still unknown today, but a stone fortification may have served the Hallgrafen as a residence as early as the 12th century. In 1196 Reichenhall and Gruttenstein were destroyed by the Archbishop of Salzburg. He had the so-called Hallburg built on nearby Streitbichl to demonstrate his power over Reichenhall. The Hallburg did not exist for long, however, and in the dispute with the Archbishop of Salzburg, the Bavarian Duke began rebuilding Gruttenstein in 1218. Although the archbishop repeatedly demanded the demolition of the complex and was even right, Gruttenstein survived this dispute and the Bavarian duke consolidated his power in Reichenhall. From the 13th century, Gruttenstein served as the official residence of the ducal-Bavarian officials who administered the Reichenhall court from there. Now the facility was given a representative character as well as a military one. Therefore, some parts of the castle were rebuilt and made more homely with large windows. That's why Gruttenstein is often referred to as a castle.

            Since the beginning of 2007, the castle, which is now privately owned, has been extensively renovated and will be open to the public once the renovation work is complete.
