The wealth and piety of the citizens in the medieval trading metropolis Lübeck not only led to the building of five large churches and the founding of monasteries. The hospital is one of the oldest social institutions in Europe. It is also one of the most important monumental structures of the Middle Ages.

The hospital could accommodate 100 sick people, later expansions increased this number. First it was used for nursing, then as a retirement home. The open-topped, wooden chambers in the great hall, the nave, were not built in until the early 19th century. The arrangement of the beds, which were previously in four rows, was retained. The 170 places in the nursing home have always been in great demand. Even the last residents left their chambers, known in Lübeck as "Kabäusterchen", only reluctantly.

With financial support from the state and federal government, a modern old people's home with 85 beds in 81 single and double rooms was set up in the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital between 1973 and 1976 for around 7.67 million marks Century preserved. In addition, a day care center for the elderly was created. The chambers of the nave and the church hall are now regularly used for a popular artisan Christmas market and for individual events.

The Heiligen-Geist-Hospital am Koberg in Lübeck, completed in 1286, is one of the oldest existing social institutions in the world and one of the most important buildings in the city.
