In the vicinity of Zell a nature trail leads over the Haidberg, which lies at 692 meters altitude in the northwest of the Fichtelgebirge. A geological feature is the embedded magnetite, which forces a compass needle out of its true direction even in small rocks.

About the Haidberg the watershed runs between the catchment areas of Saxon Saale and Main respectively Elbe and Rhine.

In the eastern part of the mountain lies a serpentinite quarry, which was closed down in 1983 and is preserved as a valuable habitat for animal and plant species that are bound to dry and warm locations. The quarry site is not accessible to visitors as rock-breeding bird species and rare reptiles have found their retreat here.

The Haidberg is on the edge of the Fichtelgebirge at 697 meters and is a striking scenic part of the Münchberg gneiss mass. It consists of serpentinite, a green-blue rock that derives its name from the Latin word serpens = snake because the surface is similar to a snake's skin.
A geological peculiarity is the embedded magnetite, which pushes the compass needle out of its true direction even in small pieces of rock.
