In 1692 the rector of Aufhausen, Johann Georg Seidenbusch, decided to build a cross on a hill near the village of Windberg, because from here a beautiful view of his parish was offered. Soon the mountain became the destination of numerous pilgrims. Just three years later, Abbot Franz Knodt von Windberg had a chapel built here. It was another abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery Windberg, who had a holy staircase built on the hill outside the village at the beginning of the 18th century in the small Holy Cross church. As soon as you enter the church, you notice its peculiarity: The Holy Stairs are not built to lead you anywhere. It stands for itself - as a reminder of the steps that Jesus had to go to the palace of Pontius Pilate. And so visitors first go to the lower part of the church, then make a pilgrimage up the 28 steps, kneeling upwards. For a variety of reasons people come here. Numerous votive tablets testify to the worries and hardships that have helped the pilgrims here. Easy to miss is a small opening near the Sacred Stairs, through which one comes only in a stooping posture. It leads to the Holy Sepulcher, which is built here throughout the year. Thus, in the small church with the Holy Cross, the Holy Steps and the Holy Sepulcher all scenes of the ordeal are to be clarified.
A Way of the Cross leads from Windberg to the Holy Cross Church and every Friday at 4 pm the Holy Mass is celebrated in the small baroque church.
