THE KLOSTERDORF WINDBERG
The medieval village is situated on a charming hill (420m above sea level) with a magnificent panoramic view of the mountains of the Bavarian Forest, the Bogenbachtal and the Danube plain.
Windberg's history has been inextricably linked to the Premonstratensian monastery for almost 900 years. This is especially evident in the historic village center of Windberg.
Around the Romanesque basilica from the 12th Century (with delightful Rococo furnishings) and the Premonstratensian monastery are grouped further historical buildings. Just outside is the pilgrimage church of St. Cross with hermitage.
The monastery village Windberg is a unique ensemble of secular and sacred buildings in Bavaria.
Around the Romanesque monastery church and the actual monastery building were all important buildings for life in the monastery. From the monastery administration, over the monastery judge up to handicraft workshops and stables. Even today, this basic structure is clearly visible.
During the village renewal from 1995 to 2005, the village center of the monastery village of Windberg was restored and renovated, and the historic buildings were beautifully restored.
The majority of the buildings that once formed the large monastery complex around the church are now privately owned.
