The first Nordermole was built as early as 1464 to protect the mouth of the Trave from silting up from sand washed up and to make it easier for ships to enter the port. After it was destroyed by a storm, the pier was rebuilt in 1834 and extended and rebuilt several times over the years. The water depth in the entrance is approx. 9.5 meters.

The Molenfeuer Travemünde is a small lighthouse on the Nordermole in Lübeck-Travemünde. The so-called Nordermolenbake marks the entrance to the Trave and warns shipping of the shallows in front of the Brodtener Ufer.
