Glückstadt is located on the north bank of the Elbe, about 50 km from the mouth, 16 km southwest of Itzehoe, on the southern edge of Schleswig-Holstein. The urban area had to be wrested by building the dike on the Elbe and is almost at sea level. In the southern half of the city, the Herzhorner Rhin and the Kremper Rhin merge to form the Rhin and flow into the Elbe with the black water at the outer harbor.

The inner harbor is accessible from the outer harbor through a barrier. Depending on the water level, this barrier opens for approximately two hours two and a half to two hours before high tide. The opening hours are available for download in the box below. The Sailing Association offers quiet moorings in pile-tied berths on the north side, and berths are available at the rear of the southern side of the inner harbor. The harbor is sufficiently deep throughout. Electricity and water are available. A mast crane approved for up to 500 kg is available near the barrier on the northern side of the inner harbor.
