A massive iron basket filled with firewood hangs at one end of the seesaw. This was lit and the basket with the seesaw was pulled up. The problem was that the wood easily set the beam structure of the rocker frame on fire. That is why they quickly switched to charcoal, which did not flare up so high. The rocking fire only burned from March to November, as there was hardly any shipping due to severe storms in the winter months. The rocker fire helped, but the range was very limited. On Skagen there was also not enough fuel for the rocker fire.

The 46-meter-tall Skagen Grå Lighthouse was built in 1858 according to plans by architect N.S. Nebelong. It is the second-tallest lighthouse in Denmark after Dueodde Lighthouse on Bornholm (47 meters). The 2-ton lens rotates on mercury, and a 400-watt sodium lamp serves as the light source. The beam, emitted every four seconds, can be seen for 20 nautical miles. The lighthouse and its buildings were converted into a migratory bird center in 2017.

Skagen Vippefyr (German Wippfeuer) was a beacon in Skagen on the Danish island of Vendsyssel-Thy. The original “Vippefyr”, the first of its kind in Denmark, was built in 1627. In the same place today there is a true-to-original copy made by Carl Locher in 1913 for the 500th anniversary of Skagen and restored in 1958. The rocking fire replaced a former so-called papegøjefyr (German parrot fire) and was in operation until 1747 when the white lighthouse was put into operation.
