In the Rococo era, the builder Duke Carl Eugen needed not only other stately buildings for his palace "La Solitude" but also extensive and pompous gardens, the so-called "pleasure gardens". They were laid out between 1764 and 1772 and, when the work was completed, were roughly the size of the Stuttgart city center at the time. Today, hardly anything remains of the formerly extensive gardens.

Originally, Schloss Solitude was surrounded by an extraordinarily original and spacious baroque garden that was unparalleled. Hedge labyrinths, orangeries, theater and a small "pleasure lake" invited to have fun with the courtly company. In the nearby forest, striking avenues and lines of sight offered the best conditions for the ducal hunt, which Carl Eugen loved and staged so much. The subsequent dukes and kings of Württemberg also valued Solitude Palace as a destination for excursions because of its fantastic view, enchanted forests and the magnificent palace rooms. Only the maintenance-intensive gardens were given up piece by piece as early as 1770.
