The Wasserkunst, a pavilion-like, free-standing building directly on the market square in Wismar, is considered the landmark of the Hanseatic city. The complex building was built from 1579 to 1602 according to plans by the Utrecht master builder Philipp Brandin in the Dutch Renaissance style. The waterworks served to supply the city with drinking water until 1897.

The banners in Latin and German tell of the drinking water supply in earlier times.

"The Wismar market square is one of the largest in Germany with its size of approx. 10,000 m². It is the largest market square in northern Germany. It was not created by converting a market town, but by planning on the drawing board , as an almost square square, there are access roads in all directions.

There are many historical buildings around the market square. For example, on the north side, the impressive town hall of Wismar, the old Swedish headquarters, the old Swede or the Reuterhaus. On the market square of Wismar stands the famous Wasserkunst, a splendid magnificent building which in earlier times served to supply the Wismar citizens with water.
