You can see the millennium tower from the Magdeburg Elbauenpark from afar. At 60 meters, the tallest wooden building in Germany houses an exhibition on the history of science.

The millennium tower is a 60 meter high exhibition and observation tower in Magdeburg. The tower was designed by the Swiss painter and building designer Johannes Peter Staub.

The millennium tower was built on the occasion of the Federal Horticultural Show in 1999 in Magdeburg's Elbauenpark. It houses an exhibition on the development of science with many descriptive, partly interactive experiments. Among other things, you can read the clock of Magdeburg Cathedral through an astronomical telescope. A Foucault pendulum suspended from the top of the tower demonstrates the rotation of the earth.

The tower was originally only designed for the duration of the garden show. It was only later that it was decided to operate the tower and the exhibition in it permanently.

The wooden tower with its asymmetrical cone shape, constructed “crookedly”, consists of form-glued glued laminated timber and is covered with a translucent film. It contains six floors, which can be reached via a staircase inside and a spiral ramp that can be walked on on the outer skin.

During use, construction defects became apparent, in particular in the penetration of structural elements through the film covering, which led to moisture damage. It has rained through since the start-up. In 2015 and 2016, the tower and the ramp, which had already been closed due to rotten boards, were renovated; the renovation costs amounted to around 2 million euros.
