The Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim (old name of the city: Nidaros) is one of the most important churches in Norway, it is considered a national shrine. The Norwegian Basic Law of 1814 stipulated that the Norwegian ruler should be crowned in Trondheim. For the brave pilgrims, it marks the destination of their pilgrimage. In the Nidaros Pilgrim Center (pilegrimsgarden.pilegrimsleden.no/de) successful pilgrims can receive their certificate and meet the pilgrim priest. There is also a café where you can relax.

The Romanesque (the oldest sections) and Gothic cathedral made of gray soapstone (12th century) is the center of a pilgrimage dedicated to St. Olaf. Moreover, it is the tomb of the Norwegian kings and accordingly national sanctuary. The large portal is adorned by a magnificent rose window, the western facade is animated by rows of statues with saints and kings. The cathedral is Scandinavia's most important medieval religious building and is still the spiritual center of Norway today. All coronation ceremonies took place there until 1906. The church was built over the tomb of St. Olav between 1066 and 1093.

Nidaros Cathedral is a must-see when visiting Trondheim. We were particularly impressed by the effort made with the figures in the front of the cathedral. In the back yard you can see how the figures have to be constantly renewed because the stone is decaying.

Nidaros Cathedral is the world's northernmost Gothic cathedral. It was built on the tomb of St. Olav, the Viking king who introduced Christianity to Norway. Construction of the cathedral began in 1070. Around the year 1300 it was finished in its full glory. You can also climb the tower in summer. The tower staircase has 172 steps, but the climb is worth it! Above you can enjoy the great view of the city.

Admission to the cathedral alone costs 120 NOK. The money is undoubtedly well spent, as the interior is even more impressive than the exterior.
During our visit, the organ was played, which was also a special experience.

The opening times are very important. We also wanted to visit the cathedral today. We were too late. It is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We didn't expect it to close at 2 p.m.

One of the most beautiful and fascinating churches I have ever been to. A real highlight and highly recommended! Also worth seeing is the exhibition on the first floor of the Crown Jewels Museum, which documents the efforts that have been put into the renovation and preservation of the building. Some of it is very amusing!! 😁

This was our third time in Trondheim and we finally decided to go to Nidaros Cathedral. In retrospect, we thought long and hard about what had stopped us from going the two times before, but we couldn't answer that question. Of course, there is an entrance fee to visit the cathedral, and at 300 kroner for the family ticket, it may not seem cheap at first glance, but we can tell you that it can be more expensive.
Well, we invested the money this time and didn't regret it for a second. It's really breathtaking what the cathedral looks like from the inside.
I'm always fascinated by the way such buildings are constructed, and in the case of Nidaros Cathedral, it is beautifully lit by appropriately positioned lights.
I can only absolutely recommend a visit, even if you're not a churchgoer. I don't know the individual images of God or statues that are there, but architecturally it is absolutely breathtaking!
