San Gimignano is a must-see if you're in the area. A small historical town situated on a hilltop. Very nice streets with many stylish and high-quality shops and restaurants. Very clean and well worth seeing, especially because of its many high turrets and narrow streets. The town has a special charm and is bearable even at high temperatures, as there are many shady alleys and places…

The city of towers is always worth a visit. The city used to have 72 "gender towers" and one tower was taller than the other...today there are 15. In one place the city is reminiscent of Manhattan in the past, because here there are 2 towers of exactly the same height and side by side, a bit like the World Trade Center...

The best time to visit San Gimmiano is when the sky is slightly cloudy and the sun's rays are still breaking through. Late afternoon. The sunset lets the city of medieval towers (“family towers”) magically appear in a special light. On the fortress wall you have a wonderful view of the Tuscan landscape. Like in the photo book. Splendid.
That's where the best photos and impressions are. Inside the fortress is a beautifully landscaped park. Very idyllic. Here you can take a break and let your thoughts wander. In the evening, many small restaurants invite you to a cozy end. The Piazza Duomo is particularly beautiful, where you can drink great Lambrusco.
Conclusion.
San Gimmiano should not be missing on a Tuscany tour. Beautiful old town.
There are a number of free parking spaces outside of the city. Walking time approx. 20-25 minutes. Inside chargeable.
I've been there four times and have always been fascinated by the city.

The highest of the family towers in San Gimignano, the Torre Grossa, can be climbed over 218 steps on a modern staircase. The entrance is through the Palazzo Communale. The height of the tower is 54 meters. There is no elevator.
The view from above of the city and the surrounding landscape is phenomenal.
To climb the upper platform, you should be free from giddiness and rather slim, as the exit is very narrow. For everyone else, there are large windows on the top floor.

The historic center has been part of UNESCO's World Heritage since 1990. San Gimignano still possesses some of the medieval towers of dynasties, which in other cities remained only as stumps. In the Middle Ages, the patrician families attempted to surpass their gender tower, although a luxurious life was not possible in them. Of the once 72 gender towers, there are still 15 in San Gimignano today. The two tallest ones, the Torre Grossa from 1311 and the Torre della Rognosa, have a height of 54 and 51 meters, respectively. The cistern on the Piazza della Cisterna was built in 1287 and was enlarged in 1346 by the Podestà Guccio Malavolti

San Gimignano is a beautiful town. It is best to visit early in the morning or late in the evening, because then the flow of tourists dies down. We lived in an agritourismo at the foot of the town and could walk to it.

San Gimignano is a small Italian town in Tuscany with a medieval town center. San Gimignano is also called “Medieval Manhattan”. Of the once 72 towers, 15 still exist in San Gimignano today, which is far more than in other cities. In the Middle Ages, patrician families tried to outdo each other in the height of their family tower, even though a luxurious life was not possible within it. The two highest, the Torre Grossa and the Torre della Rognosa, are over 50 meters high.
San Gimignano is said to be one of the most visited destinations in Tuscany by tourists, alongside Florence, Siena and Pisa. Nevertheless, when we visited on a Saturday in the early season, we still had the pleasant feeling that the city was not overcrowded and that we could enjoy the small streets, the towers and also the church. Along with Lucca, the town was one of our highlights in Tuscany.
