The ascent of the Großer Widderstein is advisable from Baad in the counterclockwise direction. Up to and from the actual entry is a mountain tour without much difficulty. Ascent in the summit channel demands surefootedness and mindfulness, especially due to loose scree. Attention: in the summer months heavily frequented.

Fantastic natural landscape, on a sunny May day only a little tourism, the last 400hm on the Widderstein are feasible only with frequent use of hands and risk-taking. Large snowfields cover the lavishly marked trails and make a climb in May even more difficult.

A tour on the Großer Widderstein requires alpine experience, sure-footedness and a head for heights. A well-visible path leads directly from the nearby road over steep mountain meadows in the direction of Widdersteinhütte. About 200m before the refuge, the path branches off to the left in the direction of the summit and leads to a steep gully, where you can easily climb the ridge. Especially the final ascent to the summit is challenging but feasible because not exposed.
