The Munich Academy of Fine Arts is one of the most important and, taking into account the previous educational institutions, one of the oldest art schools in Germany.

Building:
The older building of the academy was designed by Gottfried von Neureuther and built between 1876 and 1885 as a pompous three-wing complex of a palatial Wilhelminian style building in the style of the Neo-Renaissance. Neureuther consistently used pilaster templates on the facades of the academy to further structure the wall surfaces. The open staircase with bronze equestrian figures Castor and Pollux was designed by Max von Widnmann, the rear assembly hall was added by Friedrich von Thiersch in 1911/12. After the war was destroyed, Sep Ruf restored it in the 1950s. Now that the historic old building has been completely renovated, the garden, which is under monument protection, has also been renovated and a residential and studio building has been built there.
On October 26, 2005, the modern extension of the architects Coop Himmelb (l) au was opened in the style of deconstructivism. The new building houses plastic workshops, sculptor studios, photo workshops, screen printing and multimedia workshops as well as parts of the administration. Thanks to the “Stiftung der Kunstakademie München” founded by Ben Willikens, the realization of the new building and the restoration of the old building were made possible.

The Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1808 by King Maximilian I of Bavaria as the "Royal Academy of Fine Arts". Towards the end of the 19th century, the Munich Academy had a leading reputation worldwide. E.g. the painters Franz von Defregger and Franz von Stuck. Franz von Lenbach was a student at the time. Above all, the later reputation of its former students shows the importance of the academy at the turn of the century: the students included Wassily Kandinsky, Alfred Kubin, Paul Klee and Franz Marc. Countless well-known names can be found on individual boards that are attached to the facade of the main building along Akademiestrasse.
