On September 3rd, 1343, the village of Bernaw - without having been a market - was raised to the status of a town by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian and at the same time received the right to the "Mile Way". It is documented that Bärnau was the seat of a judge as early as 1311. Later a nursing office was established. The "Golden Road" from Nuremberg to Prague also led through the city, which was surrounded by walls on a hill and laid out in a slightly oval area, in the center of which the parish church of St. Nicholas rises.
