Western Europe's largest bear sanctuary is currently home to 12 brown bears rescued from zoos, circuses, and private holdings. Bears that have lived in captivity can no longer be released into the wild – they are too dependent on humans and would not survive in the wild.

BÄRENWALD Müritz, a FOUR PAWS animal welfare project, offers such bears an alternative: In natural enclosures, the bears can rediscover their instincts and express their natural behavior – roaming, retreating, digging dens,
bathing in the pond, or hibernating.

Here bears are really kept under optimal conditions. They live in large enclosures, can hide, and have pools and caves. All animals originally come from poor husbandry and can spend their remaining time in this facility. Very well done!
