A hike into the High Fens is worthwhile at any time of year. It's incredible how the sparse vegetation of the raised moor changes within just a few weeks.

From a purely geological point of view, the High Fens are neither part of the North Eifel nor the Ardennes, although both are often said.

In reality, it is a very old mountain range that belongs to the so-called Cambrian period (570 - 500 million years ago). This water-rich Fens massif is the birthplace of many streams and rivers that have cut deep, gorge-like fissures into the rocks and formed deep valleys. Large areas are formed as raised bogs, from which the name is derived: Venn, Fenn (Dutch Veen) for moor.

At 694 m above sea level, the Botrange is the highest elevation in the High Fens.

The Eifelsteigweg, which runs through the Hohe Venn, is a former Roman trade and military route. That's why it's so straight. Since it connects important cities with each other, it was always committed. In the Middle Ages it became an important pilgrimage route (that is what it is still called today). At the large crossroads, the Reinarzhöfe were created to take care of pilgrims.

The Hohe Venn is now only NSG. Dogs may only be carried on the Eifelsteig route, i.e. the historic street on a leash.
