According to legend, Emperor Charlemagne got lost in the High Fens on a hunting trip from his nearby residence in Aachen and was forced to spend the night on this large quartzite rock.
When he then refused the hat offered to him by his servant with the words "No hat", this is said to have led to the name of the neighboring town.
