The once most modern and still most beautiful mine in Europe has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, offering a wide range of cultural and leisure activities in fascinating industrial architecture, embedded in wild nature. No matter what the weather, the Zollverein is an experience inside and out in every season.

"The Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site - formerly the "most beautiful colliery in the world" - is now considered the most famous >> industrial monument and center of the creative economy in the Ruhr area. The impressive mine architecture inspires around 1.5 million guests from all over the world every year!

By 1986, a total of 240 million tons of coal had been mined at the Zollverein colliery. Up to 8,000 miners were employed around the clock above and below ground. In the middle of the 20th century, the coking plant was built in connection with shaft XII of the Zollverein colliery and produced up to 8000 tons of coke per day. The entire ensemble of colliery and coking plant developed into an outstanding future location in North Rhine-Westphalia and was entered in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage in 2001 under the name of World Heritage Zollverein. The mix of design, history, art and culture located here is unique! Today the industrial monument is a lively cultural site with the >> ZOLLVEREIN monument trail, the >> Ruhr Museum and the >> Red Dot Design Museum.

Visitors can expect a wide range of gastronomy and special leisure activities on the entire site. As a landmark of the Ruhr Metropolis, the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site is an absolute must for every visitor to the Ruhr area!"
