Unfortunately, it is very busy, precisely because it is well worth seeing. Very artistic design, beautiful glass windows. To be there in the morning when the light falls through the rose window above the altar into the cathedral.

On New Year's Eve 1229, Jaume I, King of Aragón, also known as the Conqueror, stormed the city of Palma after a three month siege.

As a sign of his victory, he laid the foundation stone of the Cathedral of St. Mary on the foundation walls of a mosque.

In truth, however, he was in a bit of a hurry to fulfill a promise that he had given the holy virgin. On his way across the sea his fleet got caught in a storm and he promised Mary that a church would be built if he survived the storm. “As a sign of my victory” sounds better than “I pissed my pants because of fear”.

The actual construction did not begin until around 70 years later under Jaume II, his son and lasted 300 years (until 1601). Over the centuries, the cathedral has been expanded again and again and only took on its present form around 100 years ago. Today it is only called "La Seu", Catalan for bishopric.

The cathedral, also called 'La Seu', is worth a visit to Palma alone. For me, it is undoubtedly one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals. With its silhouette rising above the Parc de la Mar, it dominates Palma's skyline.

Inside the cathedral, you'll be impressed by the spaciousness and the play of light, created primarily by the large rose window, which, with a diameter of 11 meters and over a thousand colorful mosaic stones, is the largest round window of the Gothic period.

This impressive rose window of La Seu was created in the La Gordiola glassworks. A visit to the glassworks near Palma is also worthwhile.

The landmark of Mallorca is the Gothic Cathedral of La Seu.
This magnificent building is one of the masterpieces of Gothic architecture.
The foundation stone was laid in 1230 by King Jaume I, but construction was not completed until the 16th/17th century.
The cathedral's current form was not given until 1904 by the architect Antoni Gaudi.
The interior of the cathedral covers an area of approximately 6,600 m² and is
44 meters high. The vault is supported by 14 columns.
The seven rose windows are very impressive.
The largest, with a diameter of
11.15 meters, is located in the apse arch. The impressive exterior is even more impressive than the interior, with three naves,
109 meters long and 39 meters wide. The nave has a width of 19.4 meters, far exceeding that of other cathedrals. (Cologne 12.6 meters)
